Brian J. Marquardt
Founder and Chief Science Officer
Brian J. Marquardt is an expert in the field of spectroscopy and an industry leader in the development of optical sensors for measurement applications. Building on nearly 20 year of experience in designing, developing and implementing novel optical probes and sensors, Marquardt founded MarqMetrix and now serves as the company’s Senior Principal Engineer. In this role, he guides new technology development and multivariate “big data” analysis. As well, Marquardt derives cutting-edge optical measurement solutions for the company’s industrial and government customers.
In addition to his work with MarqMetrix, Marquardt remains affiliated with the University of Washington. He is currently the Director and Senior Principal Engineer of the Center for Process Analysis and Control, and is founder and Director of the university’s Applied Optical Sensing Lab. His research specialties with University of Washington include process spectroscopy for online analysis and control, multivariate quantitative modeling of spectral data, and development of small, fast and effective optical sensors for environmental and process applications.
Marquardt received his A.B. in chemistry from Ripon College in Ripon, Wis., and his doctorate from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. His is an active member of the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Society (FACSS), and is an instructor and advisor for the FDA Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative and certification program for reviewers and inspectors. Marquardt is also a member of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy and of the Coblentz Society. He was elected to the scientific advisory board of the International Forum of Process Analytical Chemistry (IFPAC) in 2003, and to the board of the Coblentz Professional Society of Vibrational Spectroscopists in 2007.
Senior Research Scientist
A nationally recognized expert in the field of multidimensional chromatography, Bryan Prazen brings more than 15 years of experience in the development of analytical instrumentation and the interpretation of multivariate signals from complex instruments to the MarqMetrix team. He is also experienced in managing projects that involve collaboration between small companies and universities.
As senior research scientist for MarqMetrix, Prazen oversees project management, bioinformatics and analyzer design. Prior to working with MarqMetrix, Prazen served as a principal investigator for two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)-funded projects and is co-founder of a diagnostic development and biometrics software company that launched two successful products. He has also consulted with the Anatel Corporation in Boulder, Colo., PATH in Seattle, Wash., the YKI Institute for Surface Chemistry in Stockholm, Sweden, and the Oxford Biomedical Research in Oxford, Miss.
Prazen received his bachelor’s in chemistry from the University of Illinois in Chicago, Ill. He received a master’s in chemistry and a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. Prazen has been a visiting scientist for Chiang Mai University in Chaing Mai, Thailand, and at the YKI Institute for Surface Chemistry in Stockholm, Sweden.
